I asked a question pretty recently about organic matter and I appreciate the fast and thorough response. I do have another question though. I asked about the durana/patriot clover food Plot in Vermont. I was wondering what would be the best way to kill the ferns so that the clover could get a good start? Also what should I plant for a nurse crop (and seed rate) for about an acre. and also what time of year should I plant? I will be planting in an area where hand tools are the only option.
thanks for the help.

If clover is not already under the ferns then a simple glyphosate application would kill the ferns. As far as planting nurse crops, please take a look at the PlotHeads blog. This exclusively covers food plots and includes video on small food plots…especially clover! It also brings up clover only food plots to keep it simple and make it easier on the hunter to simply use herbicides to manage clover instead of clover and another species. It also has many blogs and videos on establishing plots with just hand tools!
